EV charger rain cover: clear magnetic shield for the plug while charging

Hangs over the charge port and the plug while the car charges, so rain runs off the cover instead of down the cable into the connection.

At a glance

  • Clear cover over the plug and the port while the car charges
  • Magnetic top edge holds to a steel body panel
  • Large enough for J1772, NACS and CCS plugs: 23.6 × 19.7 in
  • Clear, so the charging light stays visible
  • Folds flat into a door pocket or the trunk

Before you use it

The cover keeps rain off the connection; it does not make a damaged plug or port safe to use. If water has pooled in the port or the plug, dry it before plugging in.

What it does

A magnetic top edge

A soft magnetic strip runs along the top of the cover and holds it to a steel body panel, so it goes on in a moment after you plug in. It needs steel: check with a fridge magnet on the panel beside your port before ordering.

Clear, so you can see the port

The clear sheet lets you check the charging light and the plug without lifting the cover. Rain runs down its outside and drips off the lower edge, away from the connection.

Sized for any plug

At 23.6 inches wide and 19.7 inches tall, the cover spans the port door and the handle of a J1772, NACS or CCS plug, with the cable leaving below its open bottom edge.

Overview

Plugging in outside in the rain leaves the connection between the plug and the car exposed for hours, with water running down the cable toward it. This cover hangs over the whole area: its magnetic top edge holds to the body panel above the port, and the cable leaves from underneath.

The sheet is clear, so the charging light on the port stays visible without lifting the cover, and fabric binding runs around every edge. It goes on after you plug in and comes off before you unplug.

Compatibility

  • J1772
  • NACS (Tesla)
  • CCS1

Works with any plug, on a car whose body panel around the charge port is steel. The magnet does not hold on aluminum or plastic panels.

  • Before ordering, hold a fridge magnet against the panel beside your charge port. If it sticks, the cover will hold there too.

Questions about this product

Will it stay on my car?

It holds wherever a magnet sticks to the body panel above the charge port. It depends on the panel, not the brand of car: some EVs use aluminum or plastic there. Test with a fridge magnet before ordering.

Will the magnet scratch my paint?

A magnet does not scratch paint, but grit trapped under it does when the cover is dragged. Wipe the panel and the magnetic edge first, then place the cover against the panel rather than sliding it.

Can I leave it on while driving?

No. Take it off before you unplug and drive away. It is made to cover a parked car while it charges, not to stay on a moving one.

How is it different from the fabric charge port cover?

This clear cover is a light sheet for rain that lets you see the charging light. The fabric charge port cover closes around the cable with a drawstring and has a reflective lining, which suits snow, wind and strong sun.
