How to choose a holster and organize the cable
Match the holster to the plug, not to the car
A holster is shaped for one plug. A J1772 holster takes the round plug used by most non-Tesla chargers sold in the US; a NACS holster takes the slimmer Tesla-style plug, including the plug on a Tesla Wall Connector and on chargers built to the SAE J3400 standard. Look at the handle hanging from your charger, not at the car you drive: a Tesla owner charging through an adapter still has a J1772 plug on the wall.
The connector end of each plug type is the same shape on every charger that uses it, which is why a holster sized to the connector fits handles from different brands.
Take the weight off the plug
A long charging cable is heavy, and when it hangs from the plug it pulls on the latch and on the point where the cable enters the handle. A hook above the holster carries the coils instead, and keeps the cable off a garage floor where it is stepped on, driven over and left sitting in water.
Where to mount it
Mount the holster beside or below the charger, at a height you can reach without bending: around waist height suits most people. Leave room above it for the coils to hang, and put it on the side of the charger that faces the car so the cable does not cross in front of the unit.
Holsters fix to the wall with screws. Drywall needs the anchors supplied or a stud; brick and concrete need a masonry bit. Outside, mount it under the charger or an eave so rain does not run into the socket.
Keep the plug clean
The plug is the part of the setup that goes into the car. Parked in a socket it stays clear of dust, grit and insects, and a plug that is not dropped on concrete keeps its latch and its pins in shape for longer.

Will a J1772 holster fit a Tesla Wall Connector?
No. A Tesla Wall Connector ends in a NACS plug, which is slimmer and shaped differently from a J1772 plug. Choose the NACS holster for it, and the J1772 holster for a charger with a J1772 plug.
Do I need a holster if my charger already has a hook?
A hook on the charger holds the cable, but the plug usually hangs loose or rests on the floor. A holster gives the plug a socket that keeps dust, insects and water out of the end that touches the car.
Can a holster be mounted outdoors?
Yes, where rain does not run straight into the socket: under the charger, under an eave or under a cover. Outside, use the screws supplied or stainless screws, and check the product page for the material.
Does a holster work with a portable charger?
Yes. A portable charger ends in the same J1772 or NACS plug as a wall charger, so a holster by the outlet you use gives its plug the same place to live between charges.
