An EV charger cover shields the parts of a charging setup that sit outdoors: a cover over a wall-mounted charger keeps sun, snow and grime off it between charges, and a cover over the charge port keeps rain and snow off the plug while the car charges. It adds protection; it does not replace the charger’s own weather rating.

How to choose a cover for charging outdoors
Start from the charger’s own rating
Chargers sold for outdoor installation carry an ingress protection rating, such as IP54 or IP65, that says how well the housing keeps out dust and water. A cover is for what the rating does not cover: snow and ice building up on the unit, sun fading the plastics, and rain running down the cable into the plug while it sits in the car.
A cover for the charger, and a cover for the plug in the car
A wall charger cover slips over the unit and closes underneath around the cable. It is for the hours the charger is not working, so check your charger’s manual before leaving it on during a charge.
A charge port cover works the other way round: it goes on after you plug in, over the plug and the port, and comes off when you unplug. That is the moment rain does the most harm, running along the cable and into the connection.
Magnetic covers need a steel panel
Magnetic port covers hold on with magnet strips sewn into the edge, so they only stay put on a steel body panel. Some EVs use aluminum or plastic panels around the charge port. Before ordering, hold a fridge magnet against the panel beside your port: if it sticks, the cover will.
Measure before you buy
A wall charger cover has to be larger than the charger on every side, with room for the cable to leave from the bottom. Measure the height, width and depth of your charger and compare them with the inside dimensions on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
Does an outdoor charger need a cover?
A charger rated for outdoor use is built to be rained on. A cover is worth having where the charger faces the weather directly, where snow and ice build up on the unit and the plug, or where strong sun fades and cracks plastics over time.
Can I charge with a cover on?
A charge port cover is made for that: it goes over the plug once the car is charging. A cover over the wall charger is for the time between charges; check your charger’s manual for any clearance it needs for cooling before leaving a cover on while it works.
Will a magnetic cover scratch the paint?
A magnet does not scratch paint, but grit trapped under it does when the cover is dragged. Wipe the panel and the magnet strip before fitting, then place the cover against the panel rather than sliding it into position.
Will a cover void my charger’s warranty?
A cover that slips over the charger without any fixings leaves the charger as it was installed. Covers that screw or clamp onto a charger are a different matter, and the sensible check is your charger’s manual.
