Level 2 charger repair for a station that stopped delivering power

The short answer

Level 2 charger repair diagnoses and fixes an AC charging station that has stopped delivering power. The usual causes are an upstream breaker or feed, a welded contactor, a ground-fault trip, a damaged J1772 cable or handle, and a lost network link. A technician isolates them in that order, then prices repair against replacement.

What the symptom usually means

Five symptoms cover most Level 2 calls. Reading them before you book tells you which trade you need.

  • Dead unit, no lights, no display

    Almost always upstream of the charger: a tripped branch breaker, a loose lug, a failed disconnect, a feed that lost a leg. The supply is tested before the enclosure is opened — a station that never received power is not broken.

  • It trips a ground fault and clears on reset

    Moisture in the connector or at the cable entry, a nicked conductor, a vehicle-side fault, or failing ground-fault detection. Repeated trips are worth taking a stall out of service for: the protection is working, and something is giving it cause.

  • It energizes but a session never starts

    The display behaves, the vehicle plugs in, nothing happens. A welded or failed contactor is the common cause, then a control board that no longer closes it, then control-pilot handshake faults.

  • The cable, the handle or the pins are damaged

    A cracked handle, a bent J1772 pin, heat discoloration on a contact, a cable pulled taut by a driver who forgot to unplug. Physical damage is a parts job, and a busy site sees it more than anything else.

  • The screen is lit and the station reads offline

    Offline describes the link to the management system, not the power electronics. Rule it in or out remotely first: a charger can be capable of delivering power while it is offline.

How a Level 2 repair goes

  1. Send what your management system already shows

    The site address and access rules, the hardware make and model, how many ports there are and which are affected, the error code or OCPP status, and when it started. If the unit is under warranty or a network service contract, say so — the first call may belong to them.
  2. The network side is ruled in or out first

    A station reading offline, or one whose sessions will not authorize, is often the SIM, the backhaul or the back-end pairing rather than the hardware. None of that needs a technician in the parking lot, and the least expensive repair never becomes a visit.
  3. A diagnostic visit produces a written finding

    A vetted local technician verifies the fault, pulls codes, tests the supply, the protection, the contactor and the connector, then reports what is wrong, what repair costs, what replacement costs and the lead time. You approve before anything is ordered.
  4. The part is fitted and a real session is proved

    Contactors, ground-fault modules, control boards and cable assemblies are the usual swaps, most of them same-visit work. The stall is signed off with a real charging session at rated power, not a green status light.

What moves this price

  • Where the fault actually is. A charger fault, a fault in the service feeding it and a network fault are three different jobs with three different trades.
  • Whether the part is a stock item. A contactor usually is. A proprietary board for hardware no longer made often is not, and an orphaned product line ends the conversation at replacement.
  • How many chargers are on the site. One truck roll covering ten stalls costs far less per stall than ten separate visits.
  • Site access. A gated garage, an escort requirement, a live retail lot or a locked electrical room adds time before any tool comes out.

Repair while parts exist and the hardware can still be pointed at another back end. Replace when the product line is orphaned, when one stall fails repeatedly, or when the enclosure is corroded — past that point you are buying downtime.

Frequently asked questions

Our Level 2 charger is completely dead. Is it the charger?

Usually not. No lights and no display almost always means the unit is not receiving power: a tripped branch breaker, a loose lug, a failed disconnect or a lost leg on the feed. Check the breaker before you call anyone. If it holds and the unit is still dark, the diagnostic starts at the panel.

Why does our charger keep tripping a ground fault?

Because something is giving the protection a reason: moisture in the connector or at the cable entry, a nicked conductor, a vehicle-side fault, or failing ground-fault detection. Repeated trips that clear on reset are worth taking a stall out of service for. Resetting one repeatedly without finding the cause is the shortcut we would ask you not to take.

Can a damaged J1772 cable or handle be replaced on its own?

On most commercial Level 2 hardware, yes. Cable assemblies are designed as a serviceable part, and a swap is normally same-visit work once the assembly is on the truck. What decides it is whether the manufacturer still supplies that assembly for your model.

How much does Level 2 charger repair cost?

One stall is down and the others are fine. What does that tell you?

That the fault is almost certainly in that stall or its branch circuit, not in anything shared. Shared causes — the backhaul, the service feeding the group, the load controller, the back-end account — take everything down at once. A single dead stall points at its own breaker, contactor or cable.
