NACS retrofit: adding J3400 cables to chargers you already own

The short answer

A NACS retrofit adds a J3400 connector to charging hardware you already own, usually as a cable and holster kit rather than a new station. It works because J3400 uses the same control-pilot signaling as J1772 and CCS1. On a federally funded DC fast port, J3400 is added alongside the required CCS1 connector, never instead of it.

When a retrofit is the right move

  • Drivers arrive with a NACS inlet and leave

    The stall is healthy, the session never happens, and nothing in your uptime reporting registers it. That is the clearest case for a connector change: the asset works, the mismatch is at the plug.

  • The site was built with federal funds

    You can serve more vehicles, but the required connector stays. Treat a retrofit as an addition to what the rule requires, and confirm it against your funding conditions before ordering.

  • Workplace or multifamily pedestals need to serve everyone

    On AC hardware the change is usually a cable and holster swap, which is why it is the most common request. Residents and staff bring whatever inlet their car has, and one connector type turns some away.

  • Someone has suggested keeping a box of adapters instead

    Cheaper, and it moves the safety question onto you and your visitors. Read the industry warning below before making an adapter part of how your site works.

How a retrofit is done

  1. Confirm a kit exists for your exact model

    Manufacturer, model, revision and the connector position being changed. Kits are model-specific, not universal accessories, and this is where most retrofit conversations end.
  2. Check the funding and permitting conditions

    If federal money built the site, establish what the required connector is and confirm the addition satisfies your conditions. Where a local permit governs the equipment, it is checked in the same pass.
  3. De-energize, verify, and swap the cable

    The documented AC procedure is a field cable replacement: kill power at the panel, verify it is dead, open the faceplate, release the terminal block, land the new conductors, fit the holster insert, restore power.
  4. Update the network side and the listing

    The connector a station advertises should match the one bolted to it. A port listing the wrong connector sends drivers to a stall they cannot use — a self-inflicted version of the problem you meant to fix.
  5. Verify with a vehicle, not with a screen

    Sign-off is a real session with a car carrying that inlet, at the expected power. A connector that latches but negotiates badly is a fault to find on the day of the work.

What moves this price

  • Whether a kit exists for that model and revision. Where it does not, the honest answer is replacement rather than improvisation.

Retrofit where a kit exists for your model: it is the least expensive way to make an asset you own useful to more drivers. Use a multi-connector port where the hardware supports one and a required connector has to stay. Treat adapters as a driver’s choice, not a site strategy.

Can our existing chargers be retrofitted with NACS connectors?

Often, yes. J3400 uses the same control-pilot signaling stack as J1772 and CCS1, which is why cable swaps interoperate instead of requiring redesigned electronics. What decides it is whether the manufacturer sells a kit for your model and revision.

Can we replace the CCS connector on a federally funded charger with NACS?

No. Each DC fast charging port on a covered site must be capable of charging any CCS-compliant vehicle and must have at least one permanently attached CCS Type 1 connector. FHWA has confirmed other connectors, including J3400, are allowed so long as a CCS connector is present. A retrofit adds; it does not substitute.

Is a NACS retrofit only a cable swap?
