EV charger repair for a station that has stopped delivering power

The short answer

EV charger repair diagnoses and fixes a charging station that has stopped delivering power. The usual causes are a damaged connector or cable, a ground fault, a failed contactor, a dead payment terminal or a lost network link. Diagnosis comes first, then a written repair-or-replace finding, priced by the local technician before anything is ordered.

What the symptom usually means

The symptom names the trade: the charger, the electrical service feeding it, or the network behind it. Those are three different visits and three different bills.

  • Dead unit, no lights, no display

    Almost always upstream of the charger: a tripped breaker, a loose lug, a failed disconnect, a feed that lost a leg. The supply is tested before the enclosure is opened.

  • It energizes but no session starts

    The display behaves, the vehicle plugs in, nothing happens. A welded or failed contactor is the usual cause, then the control board that closes it, then a handshake fault.

  • A fast charger drops mid-session or runs slow

    Usually a faulted power module or the cooling loop — clogged filters, a leaking coolant circuit, a failed fan — because the unit derates itself rather than overheat.

  • The screen is lit and the station reads offline

    Offline describes the link to the management system, not the power electronics. Rule it out remotely first: a charger can deliver power perfectly well while it is offline.

  • The port reads available and nobody can charge

    A dead card reader, a cracked handle, a bent pin, a cable pulled taut by a driver who forgot to unplug. Screens and connectors take the most abuse.

How a repair goes

  1. Send what your management system shows

    The site address and access rules, the hardware make and model, which ports are affected, the error code or protocol status, and when it started. If the unit is under warranty or a network contract, say so — the first call may belong to them.
  2. The network side is ruled out first

    A station reading offline, or one whose sessions will not authorize, is often the SIM, the backhaul or the back-end pairing rather than the hardware. None of that needs anyone in the parking lot.
  3. A diagnostic visit produces a written finding

    A vetted, licensed local technician verifies the fault, pulls codes, tests the feed, the protection, the contactor and the connector, then reports what repair costs, what replacement costs and the lead time. You approve before anything is ordered.
  4. The part is fitted and a real session is proved

    The stall is signed off with a real charging session at rated power rather than a green status light, and the work is documented for your records and your reporting.

What moves this price

  • Where the fault actually is. A charger fault, a fault in the service feeding it and a network fault are three different jobs with three different trades.
  • Whether the part is a stock item. A contactor usually is; a power module or a terminal for discontinued hardware often is not, and an orphaned product line ends the conversation at replacement.
  • How many chargers are on the site, and how hard it is to get into. One truck roll covering ten stalls costs far less per stall than ten visits, and a gated garage or an escort adds time.

Know which version each unit speaks before you plan anything. Moving off the older branch is a genuine migration rather than a setting, and on a federally funded site the target is written into the rule.

A port counts as up only when its hardware and software are both online and available or in use, and it dispenses electricity at the required minimum power level. Uptime is calculated monthly across the previous twelve months, and outage minutes outside the operator’s control are excluded.

  • NREL notes structural blind spots in that definition: a broken credit card reader or a gasoline vehicle blocking the stall does not count against uptime, the exclusions still leave drivers without a working charger, and uptime is typically self-reported by operators.

  • Federally funded chargers must conform to Open Charge Point Protocol 1.6J or higher, and to OCPP 2.0.1, so the version a station speaks is a compliance question on those sites. The same rules require a charger to remain able to complete a session when network communication is temporarily disrupted.

Frequently asked questions

Our charger reads offline but the screen is lit. Is the hardware broken?

Often not. Offline describes the link between the station and its management system, not the power electronics. Work outward: the SIM and cellular signal or the site backhaul, then the WebSocket and TLS handshake, then heartbeats, then the endpoint and credentials at either end. Rule the link out before anyone quotes hardware.

What usually fails on a DC fast charger?

Sessions that start and drop, or a stall running well under its rating, usually mean a faulted power module or a cooling problem: clogged filters, a leaking coolant loop, a failed fan. A handle that will not lock, or pins showing heat discoloration, is a connector job.

Should we repair this charger or replace it?

Three things decide it. Parts: if modules, cable assemblies and terminals are available at a sane lead time, repair usually wins. The back end: hardware that genuinely speaks the open protocol can be moved to another management system if your provider goes away, and closed hardware often cannot. Connectors: a J3400 cable on a unit that accepts a kit beats a new station. We sell neither chargers nor networks, so the visit prices both paths.

How much does EV charger repair cost?

A diagnostic visit typically runs $150 to $350, and many operators credit it against the repair. A Level 2 repair usually falls between $200 and $800. A DC fast charger repair runs $500 to $3,000, because modules and liquid-cooled cables cost more and take longer to fit. A plan runs $300 to $1,200 per charger per year. Estimates, not quotes.

What does a preventive maintenance plan cover?

Scheduled attention instead of emergency calls: torque checks, connector and cable wear, ground-fault testing, filter and coolant service, firmware review, and a verified session at rated power. Manufacturers treat some parts as consumables on fixed intervals — one DC fast charger manual calls for new air filters every two years, new cables every three and new coolant every five.

Who does the work, and are they licensed?

Independent local companies do, not us. Charger work is licensed electrical work in most jurisdictions, so a request goes to companies that hold the license and insurance their state requires.
