EV charger cable lock: keep the plug locked to the wall or to the car
An EV charger cable lock stops someone else unplugging or using your charging plug. A lockable holster locks a J1772 plug into a socket on the wall between charges, and an adapter lock keeps a J1772 plug latched to a Tesla’s adapter while the car charges at a public station.

Buying guide
Which lock protects what
A charger in a driveway or a shared garage
A charger mounted outside or in a shared parking area can be used by anyone who walks up to it, and its plug can be yanked, dropped or driven over. A lockable holster holds the plug in a socket and locks it with a combination, so only someone with the code can take the plug out to charge.
Look at how the lock holds the plug. A lock that works on the plug’s own latch holds it far better than a strap or a clip around the handle.
A Tesla charging at a J1772 station
A Tesla charges from a J1772 station through an adapter. While the car is locked and charging, the car holds the adapter in its charge port, but the station’s plug can still be unlatched from the adapter and pulled away, which ends the charge.
An adapter lock sits around the joint between the plug and the adapter and covers the plug’s latch release. With the adapter held in the car, it cannot be slid off, so the plug stays latched until you unlock the car and take the adapter out.
What a lock does not do
These locks are deterrents. They stop an opportunist and slow down a determined thief, and they do the most where they are in plain view and the area is lit. None of them makes a charger or a cable impossible to steal.
Frequently asked questions
Does a lockable holster stop someone charging from my charger?
Yes, while it is locked. The plug is held in the holster, so nobody can take it out to plug in a car without the code. It does not switch the charger off, so check whether your charger’s app can also require authorization before charging starts.
Will an adapter lock fit my Tesla J1772 adapter?
It depends on the shape of the adapter body. The lock sold here fits adapters with a smooth, straight body behind the plug and does not fit adapters with a raised ring, or flange, around the body. Compare your adapter with the photos on the product page before ordering.
Can I charge with the lock on?
The adapter lock is made to stay on while the car charges; that is when it works. A lockable holster holds the plug between charges: you open it, take the plug out and charge.
What happens if I forget the combination?
Combination locks can usually be reset only when open, so write the code down when you set it. If the holster is locked and the code is lost, contact us with your order number before cutting anything.
