The short answer
A car lockout service sends a technician with long-reach tools and an air wedge to open the door without drilling the lock or breaking glass. You show ID and something that ties you to the vehicle before any work starts. A key that is lost, broken or shut in the trunk is a different job.

Call 9-1-1 first, before us and before anyone else. The inside of a closed car heats far faster than the air around it, and emergency services will open it. Do not wait on an arrival estimate when someone in the car is in distress.
The keys are on the seat and the car locked itself
You can see them through the glass. Many cars relock themselves a short time after being opened, and a proximity key left in the cabin does not stop the doors from locking behind you. This is the ordinary lockout, and it is the quickest one.
The trunk shut with the keys inside
The doors are locked and the keys are in the one compartment with no handle on the inside. What happens next depends on the car: a fold-down rear seat or a ski pass-through gives a route in, and a fixed bulkhead does not.
The fob has gone dead and the car ignores it
A key fob with a flat coin cell will not unlock anything. Most fobs hide a mechanical blade key, and most door handles hide a keyhole under a plastic cap. If the car itself is electrically dead, the locks are dead too, and that is a battery problem.

Some cars are not opened this way: a reinforced frame, a deadlocked door, keys locked in a sealed trunk. If the key is lost or broken rather than shut inside, the car needs one cut and matched to it. The technician tells you which of those you are looking at.

A lockout is billed as one service call, not by distance, and the local operator confirms the final price with you before anyone is dispatched. Nights, weekends and holidays carry the operator’s after-hours rate. The figures below are indicative ranges for a light vehicle in normal conditions, not quotes.

What moves this price
- The hour and the day. A call at night, on a weekend or on a holiday carries the operator’s after-hours rate.
- Where the car sits. A gated lot, a parking structure level or a rural driveway all add time before work can start.
- The vehicle. Frameless windows, deadlocking doors and reinforced frames take longer, and a few models cannot be opened at the roadside at all.
- What is actually wrong. A key you can see on the seat is a short visit; a key nobody can find is a locksmith or a dealer, and priced there.

Roadside lockout or an automotive locksmith?
The difference is not how expensive the car is. It is whether the key exists and is inside the vehicle.

Will opening the door damage my car?
The method is chosen so it does not. A wedge spreads the door frame by a fraction of an inch and a coated rod goes through the gap, which leaves no mark on the paint, the lock or the glass. Cars with frameless windows, tight weather seals or a door packed with wiring need more care, and a technician who sees one should tell you what the method is before starting rather than after.
What proof do I need that the car is mine?
A driver license and something linking you to that vehicle: the registration, an insurance card, a title, or the car showing in the manufacturer app on your phone. For a rental, the rental agreement. For a company vehicle, someone at the company has to authorize it. If none of that can be produced, the technician will not open the car — which is exactly what you want on the day someone else is standing at your door handle.
Can you get keys out of a locked trunk?
It depends on the car. Where the rear seats fold or there is a pass-through, the technician opens a door and reaches the trunk from inside the cabin. A sedan with a fixed bulkhead has no route in, and getting the trunk itself open becomes locksmith work. Many trunks also have a glow-in-the-dark release handle on the inside, which matters if anyone is ever shut in one.
My key fob is dead. Is that still a lockout?
It is, but it is often one you can solve yourself in the parking lot. Most fobs hold a mechanical blade key that slides out with a small catch, and most door handles hide a keyhole under a plastic cover you can pry off with a fingernail. Try that first. If the car is completely unresponsive with the door open, the twelve-volt battery is flat and the visit you want is a jump start.
A child or a pet is locked in the car. What should I do?
Call 9-1-1 immediately. A closed car heats up much faster than the air outside it, and the risk to a small child or an animal is measured in minutes. Emergency responders can open the vehicle and will not wait for a service van to arrive. Call us afterward if the car still needs attention. Nothing on this page is worth the delay in that situation.
Can a technician open any vehicle?
Most, but not every one. A handful of newer models with deadlocking doors, reinforced frames or unusual glass are genuinely bench jobs for a locksmith or a dealer, and a technician who says so on arrival is protecting your car rather than avoiding work. Give the year, make and model when you call, and the operator can usually tell you before anyone is dispatched.
