What the state documents say
A salvage or independent dealer taking your vehicle to dismantle must receive a properly assigned Certificate of Title, and must send TxDMV Form VTR-340 with that ownership evidence before the thirty-first day after acquiring it. Take your plates off: TxDMV does not take them back, so you either move them to another vehicle of the same classification, keep them, or deface them with permanent black ink so they cannot be reused. Filing the Vehicle Transfer Notification (Form VTR-346) within thirty days of the sale date is what stops parking tickets and toll violations run up by the new keeper from landing on you.
