Best Portable Jump Starters for Cars, Trucks and Diesels

The short answer

A jump starter is the difference between a dead battery and a tow. Size it by engine: a compact car is comfortable on a small pack, a large gas V8 or a diesel needs one rated for it, and a unit that also inflates a tire covers the two commonest roadside failures at once.

The shortlist

The three picks that answer most of the reasons people land on this page. The full list, with the specialist cases, is below.

How this list was built

Nothing on this list was in our hands. Each pack was read against the engine it claims to start — peak amps, rated displacement, capacity, cold-weather range, what protections it carries — and then against what owners report through a winter. Where a claim and a season of reports disagree, the reports win.

  • Published specifications, taken from the manufacturer’s own listing and compared column for column.
  • Verified buyer reviews on Amazon, weighted by how many there are rather than by the average alone.
  • One product per job. A second pick for the same buyer makes the list longer and the decision harder.
  • The commission is identical whichever of these you buy, so it cannot decide the order.

The specifications, side by side

Published specifications for every pick, as the manufacturer states them. Prices are checked on Amazon, which is where the current one always is.

Pick 1 of 8Best overall compact

NOCO Boost GB40 1000A UltraSafe Jump Starter

The compact benchmark everyone else is measured against.

Best for Compact everyday (gas up to 6L / diesel up to 3L)

4.6 out of 5 on Amazon129,142 ratings

9 / 10 our score, based on published specifications and buyer reviews

Peak amps
1000A
Max gas engine
6.0L
Max diesel
3.0L
Starts per charge
up to 20

What it does well

  • Spark-proof and reverse-polarity safe, hard to misuse
  • Genuinely pocketable at 2.4 lb
  • Enormous, consistent owner track record (129,000+ ratings)

What to know

  • 1000A is light for large gas V8s and diesels over 3L
  • USB output is not fast-charge PD
  • Premium price for the amp rating

Our take

For a daily-driver sedan, crossover or small truck, the GB40 is the safe default: small enough to actually keep in the glovebox and backed by one of the deepest owner-review records of any car accessory. Step up if you run a diesel or a big V8.

Pick 2 of 8Best for big engines

Hulkman Alpha 85 2000A Smart Jump Starter

A big-amp starter with a screen that tells you what's happening.

Best for Big engine + smart display (gas up to 8.5L / diesel up to 6L)

4.8 out of 5 on Amazon548 ratings

8.7 / 10 our score, based on published specifications and buyer reviews

Peak amps
2000A
Max gas engine
8.5L
Max diesel
6.0L
Starts per charge
up to 60

What it does well

  • 2000A handles large gas and mid diesel engines
  • 3.3in display shows charge, status and errors
  • Up to 60 starts per charge

What to know

  • Smaller review base than the segment leaders
  • Bulkier than a pure-compact unit
  • Screen adds a failure point vs simple LED units

Our take

The Alpha 85 is the pick when 1000A is not enough and you want feedback rather than guesswork. The display removes the classic 'is it charged, did it work' anxiety, and 2000A covers the SUV, pickup and mid-diesel range the GB40 leaves on the table.

  • 160 PSI auto-off inflator covers a flat as well as a dead battery
  • Built-in cable and 45W output

What to know

  • Jack-of-all-trades; a dedicated inflator moves more air
  • Heavier than a bare jump starter
  • 4000A headline is peak, not sustained

Our take

If you want one device that answers both of the two most common roadside failures - dead battery and flat tire - the A5 is the value play. It is the natural cross-sell to the tire-inflator range and the single most trunk-useful unit on this list.

  • Force-start for deeply dead batteries, wide temperature range

What to know

  • Slightly lower average rating than the premium picks
  • Inflator is convenience-grade
  • Peak-amp spec is optimistic like all combos

Our take

The A3 is the sweet spot of power, price and proven owner history. With thousands of ratings behind it and coverage up to 6.5L diesel, it is the safest recommendation for a reader who wants one starter to cover a mixed household fleet.

Pick 5 of 8Best for shops / fleets

Clore Jump-N-Carry JNC660 1700A Jump Starter

The shop-counter standard that just keeps starting cars.

Best for Pro / commercial (lead-acid AGM)

4.6 out of 5 on Amazon19,830 ratings

8.8 / 10 our score, based on published specifications and buyer reviews

Peak amps
1700A
Weight
~18 lb
Protections
industrial clamps, robust cabling
Warranty
manufacturer limited

What it does well

  • Lead-acid delivers sustained cranking a small lithium unit can't
  • Heavy 46in #2 AWG cables reach awkward battery locations
  • Nearly 20,000 ratings; a genuine trade standard

What to know

  • Heavy (~18 lb) and not pocketable
  • No USB/power-bank features
  • Must be recharged after each use and maintenance-charged

Our take

For a workshop, a dispatch vehicle or a fleet yard, the JNC660 is the credibility pick: it is what technicians actually reach for. Not a glovebox tool, but the most authoritative recommendation for professional and repeat-use readers - a natural fit for the roadside-assistance silo.

Pick 6 of 8Best pocket / budget

GansTiank 4000A Compact Jump Starter (14000mAh)

Slim, high-amp and cheap enough to keep one in every car.

Best for Ultra-compact / budget (gas up to 8L / diesel up to 7L)

4.7 out of 5 on Amazon11 ratings

7.4 / 10 our score, based on published specifications

Peak amps
4000A
Max gas engine
8.0L
Max diesel
7.0L
Starts per charge
multiple

What it does well

  • Genuinely slim (1.25in) - fits a door pocket
  • High headline amps and wide temperature rating for the price
  • Force-start for dead batteries

What to know

  • Small, new review base - buy on spec, not on reputation yet
  • Off-brand support and warranty are unproven
  • Peak-amp claim unverified by long-term owners

Our take

A spec-led budget option for readers who want a second, keep-it-in-the-car unit rather than their primary starter. We rate it on published specs, not owner history, and say so plainly - the review base is still thin.

Pick 7 of 8Best for everyday drivers

HALO Bolt Air 58830 Emergency Power Kit + Jump Starter

The consumer-friendly emergency kit for non-technical drivers.

Best for Power-bank multifunction (jump + air + charge + light)

4.7 out of 5 on Amazon5 ratings

7.6 / 10 our score, based on published specifications

Peak amps
car/SUV rated
Capacity
58,830 mWh
Weight
kit format
Protections
reverse-polarity

What it does well

  • Big power-bank capacity plus a real AC outlet
  • Adjustable-pressure inflator with multiple nozzles
  • Approachable, gift-friendly format

What to know

  • This specific listing is a two-color bundle with a very small review count
  • Not aimed at big diesels
  • Kit convenience over raw cranking power

Our take

Halo's Bolt Air fills the 'do-everything emergency kit' slot for readers who want charging, inflation and a light as much as a jump. Verify the exact SKU on the listing before publishing - the two-color bundle has a thin review base - and lean on Halo's brand history rather than this SKU's counts.

Pick 8 of 8Best fast-charge

GOOLOO GT4000S 4000A Jump Starter (100W Fast-Charge)

Recharges in a lunch break and powers a laptop at 100W.

Best for Premium fast-charge / laptop power

4.9 out of 5 on Amazon97 ratings

8.4 / 10 our score, based on published specifications and buyer reviews

Peak amps
4000A
Starts per charge
up to 60
Capacity
26.8 Ah
USB-C output
100W USB-C (laptop-capable)

What it does well

  • 100W two-way USB-C: refills in ~1.2h and runs a MacBook
  • 4000A and 60 starts per charge
  • Highest average rating on this list (4.9)

What to know

  • Moderate review base vs the mass-market leaders
  • Premium positioning
  • No integrated inflator

Our take

The GT4000S is for the reader who resents waiting hours to recharge a jump box and wants it to double as a serious laptop power bank. The 100W two-way USB-C is the standout feature - rare at this size - and the 4.9 average, while on a smaller base, is the highest here.

What to decide before you buy

Peak amps, and why the number on the box is not the spec

Peak amps is an instantaneous figure measured in ideal conditions, and every brand measures it slightly differently. The specification that survives comparison is the engine size the manufacturer will state: displacement in litres, gas and diesel quoted separately, because a diesel needs roughly twice the current a gas engine of the same size does.

Lithium or lead-acid?

A lithium pack is small enough to live in a glovebox and holds its charge for months. A professional lead-acid unit is heavy, has to be kept on a maintainer, and will start an engine that a lithium pack of the same claimed rating gives up on — which is why shops and fleets still buy them. For one car in a driveway, lithium.

Cold is the condition that decides it

A battery fails on the first cold morning because cold is when an engine needs the most current and a battery can deliver the least. That is also when a lithium pack is weakest, so the operating-temperature range is not a footnote: a pack rated only to freezing is a pack that will not help on the morning you need it.

What it does when it is not starting a car

A pack spends almost all its life not starting anything. USB-C power delivery makes it the thing that charges a laptop on a long drive; a built-in compressor makes it the thing that handles a slow puncture; a work light makes it the thing you reach for at the roadside in the dark. Those features are why it is still charged when it is finally needed.

Safety protections are not a feature list

Reverse-polarity, short-circuit, over-current and spark-proof protection are what stand between a mistake at the terminals and a damaged ECU. Every pack here carries them; the reason to check is that the ones which do not are still on sale, and clamps that will not pass current until they are correctly attached are the whole reason a beginner can use one of these safely.

What buyers ask

How many amps do I need for my engine?

Peak amps scale with displacement. A compact car under ~3L is comfortable on 800-1000A; a 4-6L gas engine wants 1500-2000A; a large gas V8 or a diesel above 6L wants 2000-3000A or more. Higher peak amps also help in cold weather and with deeply discharged batteries, so it is safer to size up than down.

Can a jump starter start a diesel?

Yes, if it is rated for one. Diesels need far more cranking current, so check the diesel figure specifically (in liters) rather than the headline peak-amp number. Units here range from 3.0L diesel (NOCO GB40) up to 6.0-7.0L diesel (Hulkman Alpha 85, GOOLOO A3, GansTiank).

How long does the charge last sitting in the car?

Lithium units typically hold a usable charge for several months to a year when stored around room temperature, but heat and cold both accelerate self-discharge. Most makers recommend topping up every 3-6 months. A lead-acid unit like the Clore JNC660 needs recharging after every use and periodic maintenance charging.

Jump starter vs jumper cables?

Jumper cables need a second running vehicle and correct technique; a jump starter is self-contained and works alone, which matters on an empty road. The trade-off is that a jump starter must be kept charged. Many drivers keep both.

Is it safe to leave one in the trunk in summer?

Lithium jump starters have a rated temperature range (often up to ~140F / 60C). Sustained trunk heat above that shortens battery life and, in worst cases, is a safety risk. In hot climates, store it in the cabin or bring it inside during heat waves, and check the maker's stated temperature range.

How often should I recharge it?

Every 3-6 months for lithium units, and always after a jump. Check the charge indicator seasonally, before long trips, and going into winter, when both cold starts and self-discharge are worst.

When a tool is not the answer

A pack starts a car whose battery is flat. It says nothing about why the battery went flat, and a battery that has died twice will die a third time — usually somewhere less convenient than a driveway.

Estimates only. The local operator confirms the final price before dispatch.
